What is acupuncture

Acupuncture is an ancient form of medicine originating in China.

Our well-being is dependent on the smooth flow of ‘qi’ (vital energy) and blood throughout our body, mind and spirit.

If the smooth flow is interrupted, there are likely to be symptoms of illness, and the body is considered to be ‘out of balance’.

This interruption can be caused by a number of factors. Emotional states such as anxiety, stress, anger, fear or grief, poor nutrition, weather conditions, hereditary factors, infections, poisons and trauma. By inserting fine acupuncture needles into the channels of energy, an acupuncturist can stimulate the body’s own healing response and help restore its natural balance. The principal aim of acupuncture in treating the whole person is to recover the equilibrium between the physical, mental and emotional aspects of the individual.

Five Element acupuncture effectively addresses the root of the condition as well as symptoms, thereby restoring a healthy balance.

As well as the use of individually wrapped disposable needles, heat may be applied in the form of a herb called Moxa. This is a special herb used to bring warmth to specific acupuncture points on the body.
